Soundwalk: Long Island City
As soon as I step out the door of my building, the first thing I hear is a car drive by the street. As I continue my route to the subway, the sound of cars driving by seems to remain constant. Footsteps start to emerge. I hear the heels of the woman behind me and the stomping boots walking next to me. As I continue to walk different footsteps fade and later reappear. Nearing the dog park, two dogs are barking and their owners try to quiet them. Nearing the subway, people start to gather at the entrance with murmurs and some with music spilling out of their head phones. Everyone tries to go down the one staircase at the same time.
Nighttime unveils a different sounds. Laughter and conversation rise from a group of friends huddled on the corner. A guitar riff from a song playing in a pub is carried outside. Like the morning, footsteps can be heard fading in out down the block. However, this time they're accompanied with conversations. The Cuban restaurant is having a salsa night, with loud latin music dominating the space. The music rises the volume of the conversations that occur in and out of the restaurant. Further down the street, cars and conversations continue to fade in and out.
